The First Battle of Bull Run is considered the first real battle of the Civil War. The Union's plan was to crush the South so they marched toward Richmond,Va. They met Confederate troops and had them retreating, until Confederate reinforcements arrived and pushed back the North. The Union troops then retreated back to the North. This proved the Civil War would not be an easy victory for the North.

General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson earned his nickname in the First Battle of Bull Run. He was given this nickname because another general named Barnard Elliott Bee, Jr. trying to rally his troops shouted, "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer. Rally behind the Virginians!"
